Straightening Hair Questions
Straightening Hair
Is it harmful to straighten hair?
Chemically straightening your hair is damaging to the hair structure. Using flat irons all the time will damage the cuticle and eventually will cause split ends and possible breakage. That is because every time you do this you are removing moisture from the hair. Hair needs at least 8% moisture to be in optimum condition.
When using flat irons make sure that your hair is totally dry. If you apply hot irons to damp hair this moisture inside the hair will bubble up and blister. This will then cause breakage. If you do use flat irons use a good thermal protector or non-chemical straightened such as razzamatazz strait time.
Specific questions from our survey
Question
How do you straighten hair easily?
Answer
Use a non-chemical hair straightener first this will keep your hair straighter for longer and also protect your hair. Shampoo your hair and apply the lotion. Then waft the hair until it is totally dry. Use a light hair spray all over the hair and then use your flat irons. Do not use creams or oils, as they will fry your hair.
Can you suggest a product? Razzamatazz strait time.
Question
How often is the max you can really straighten your hair a week/ I do it 5 times but use loads of protection sprays and cream and a repair mask. Is that OK?
Answer
I am afraid not. In an ideal world I would suggest not doing this more than once a week, and worst-case scenario no more than twice a week. Your hair is going to rebel at some point and break off. If you really want straight hair that badly, then use a non-chemical hair straightener this will prolong the life of your straight hair.
** Diana perhaps you could explain what protection sprays and creams you should use?**
Protection creams and oils should be avoided. If you put oil into a frying pan and add heat what does it do? (FRY!) Hence the term my hair is fried. Creams contain oils and emollients so avoid them. Use a good thermal protector lotion or gel before blow-drying the hair, and then a good light hair-spray before applying the hot irons. Make sure that if you use anti-frizz products that they are silicone FREE. Silicones will coat the hair and cause product build up. Silicones will then prevent treatments and conditioners from being able to penetrate into the hair shaft.
Can you suggest any products? Razzamatazz Glitz

Question
I have curly frizz prone hair and would like to be able to use a hair straightener properly without the frizz.
AS ABOVE
Question
How do you keep your hair straight if it is rough and short?
Answer
If your hair is short it is quite difficult to use flat iron to straighten it. It would be easier to use a hair wax. This would control your hair and add shine.
Can you suggest a product for the hair wax? American Crew hair wax.
Question
Is it harmful to straighten hair?
Answer
YES! It will dry out your hair and damage the cuticle, making your hair dull, dry and brittle. Curls are back, so if you have curls count your blessings. I have extremely curly hair and enjoy my curls. I get stopped in the street all the time to ask how I got my curls. It feels great to be able to say that they are natural.
