These are some questions on hair care from our survey that don’t fit into our previous categories.

Question

Should a stylist part and comb through when relaxer has been applied to the clients hair? Or should it just be left on once perm has been applied until time to wash out?
Answer
If it is a re-touch it should NOT be combed through as this means that the relaxer is being overlapped onto previously relaxed hair, which is sure to cause the hair to break. If it is the first time ever that the hair is relaxed, then you would apply to the mid lengths and ends first and the roots last. This is because the heat from the scalp will process the hair at the roots more quickly.
The next step is to rinse THOROUGHLY until all relaxer is rinsed out and then to go ahead and neutralize.

Question
I am trying to grow my hair out. Are Keracare products good for this?
Answer
Yes! Keracare products are good, look for products that are high in natural humectants. Razzamatazz moisture loc shampoo is 90% coconut oil which is a natural humectant. (Humectants attract moisture )

Question
Why do I have to wait 14 days to put colour on permed hair?
Answer
You do not have to wait 14 days. 7 days is quite sufficient. You need to wait at least 48 hours. This is because there are still chemical reactions occurring inside the hair shaft for that length of time.

Question
Why does African-American hair grow so slow vs. other groups?
Answer
It is not that it grows slowly, it is that, as it grows it curls. The hair follicle of African-American hair is curled causing the hair to grow in a spiral fashion. However the lifespan of African –America hair is shorter than that of Caucasian hair. The average lifespan of African American hair is 1 to 3 years, meaning that the maximum your hair will grow before shedding is 18 inches. Hair that is curly looks three times shorter than it’s actual length, sometimes more. Therefore your hair appears not to grow.

Question
I have curly hair. I want it to be silky. What can I do for that?
Answer
Leave your hair natural; do not use a blow-drier or any hot styling tool. Do not use anti-frizz products that contain silicone. Use products high in natural humectants and a good styling lotion to keep your curls defined and shiny such as razzamatazz jellee.

Question
I have Asian hair how do I keep my cornrow in for at least 2 weeks with out it looking messed up?
Answer
Use a good liquid gel or light pomade such as razzamatazz gloss, this will smooth down the short fly aways that make corn rows look frizzy.

***Do you know what a cornrow is Diane? ***
A cornrow is a very small scalp plait. They are very popular in the Caribbean, where they use decorative beads on the ends of each cornrow, like Bo Derek in the movie 10. They are also a good way to style African American hair.

Question
How do you grow dread locks faster and how do you lock them?
Answer
The key to locking dreads is not to shampoo too often. Dipping your hair in salt water is a good way to start off dreads. They do not grow very quickly as they are twisting as they grow. The best way to get long dreads quickly is to have extensions applied to your natural hair. You can then have them removed if you get tired of them. If you dread your own hair, the only way to remove them is to have them cut out. Which normally means going very short.

Question
I had my hair coloured and highlighted. One side turned out lighter than the other. What can I do?
Answer
You need to go back to your stylist and explain that you are not happy. They will either have to lighten the darker side, with high lights or darken the lighter side with lo lites.

Question
Is there anything I can do about thin, fine, straight hair?
Answer
Use styling products that are body building. Also semi permanent hair colours coat the hair shaft and give the hair a thicker feel. If all else fails you can get hair extensions that are not only used to lengthen hair, but can also be used to add fullness.

Question
What keeps hair oily?
Answer
Oily hair is caused be an over active Sebaceous gland. This gland surrounds the hair as it grows and the oil that it produces (sebum) is to give the hair it’s natural shine and also protect the scalp. However sometimes it is over active and causes oily hair, scalp or skin. If the sebaceous gland is under active your hair, scalp or skin will be dry. In this case you can stimulate the gland by massaging the scalp.

Question
Is cod liver oil good for hair? Most Indians who live near the sea have jet-black hair with lots of volume and they use it.
Answer
Cod liver oil is not good for your hair. The molecules of this oil are too large to penetrate into the hair. The shine is an artificial shine as the oil sits on the hair shaft. Using oils in a hot climate can actually fry the hair. Oils will also build up on the hair and are difficult to shampoo out as oil and water do not mix. If you do use oils on your hair, when shampooing out apply the shampoo before the water and emulsify. Then rinse out and shampoo as usual.

Question
Should you or should you not apply oil to the hair/scalp? I’ve heard people promoting this and others condemning it.
Answer
NO! Oils will clog pores on your scalp preventing health hair growth and causing dandruff. They will coat the hair and caused product build up.

Question

I’ve read that you should rinse your hair in cold water after washing to keep it shiny. Is this true?
Answer
What cold water does is to help to close the cuticle ( the outer layer of the hair) When the cuticle is closed light I able to bounce of the hair and create shine.
